Poised on the brink of an abyss. South Sudan descended into chaos earlier this month as the peace deal signed less than a year ago collapsed. After fighting erupted outside the presidential compound, First Vice-President Riek Machar has fled the country. But now President Salva Kiir has replaced him with Taban Deng Gai, in a move that some believe could push the state back into civil war.

So with Machar missing-in-action, can peace be restored to the world’s youngest nation? And what exactly happened to put South Sudan back on the brink?
