The Nigerian army says it killed at least 42 Boko Haram fighters and rescued 80 people who were being held captive, on Tuesday during a raid on a village in the north-east.

Those rescued were women and children, and have been taken to a military medical facility for treatment, the army said in a statement.

The military has reported freeing as many as 10 000 Boko Haram captives this year but none of the 219 girls from Chibok school.

The Boko Haram Islamist terror group has waged an insurgency in the West African country for almost a decade.

UNICEF this week warned that about 49,000 children in Borno state in Nigeria face death if they are not reached with treatment. It said around 250,000 children in the region face malnutrition due to the effects left by the Islamist militants activities.
