India’s Prime Minister has arrived in Maputo, Mozambique in the first leg of his four nation African tour. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed by Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi, and was honoured with the guard of honour.
The Indian PM’s trip to Africa is meant to raise India’s relations with Africa especially in energy, trade and investment.
PM Modi will head out to South Africa, then to Tanzania and finish off his African trip in Kenya.
The four African countries on the Indian Ocean are the gate ways to landlocked African countries according to theAP.
India hopes to sign agreements on energy as Mozambique is set to become the world’s third largest exporter of natural gas after Qatar and Australia.
Indian PM’s Speech today talked of Agricultural agreements that have been signed, terrorism, maritime security and drug trafficking issues among other things. He also said that India will be donating medicines to the South African country.
“India commitment to buy pulses from Mozambique would help meet India’s requirement.It will also facilitate long-term investments in commercial farming, generate farm employment and raise farmer’s incomes in this country.Health care is another area where India’s capacities and Mozambican needs match well.” Said PM Modi
India has been trying to control the prices of pulses, a staple diet for millions of its poor, which have doubled in the past 18 months because of two successive drought years according to the AP.
