Rwandan first lady in Gabon to mark #InternationalWidowsDay
Rwanda’s first lady, Mrs Jeannette Kagame is in Gabon to mark the day of widows with Gabon’s first lady Sylvia Ondimba the place where it all began.
UN general assembly on 21 December 2010 confirmed the celebration of international widows’ day on the 23rd of June annually after Gabon first lady Ondimba initiative through diplomacy.
They will both meet with widows in Liberville, Gabon’s capital to engage them in talks about the problems they encounter and discuss health insurance, with representatives for the Ministry of health in Gabon and National Fund for Health Insurance as well.
The two first ladies will visit today a school founded by Gabon’s Sylvia Ondimba in 2013 that provides pedagogic references, innovation and excellent skills in Africa.
The two state ladies will talk about promoting education and development for women in their countries.
Widows among the most marginalized and isolated yet they face the most serious violations of human rights enduring extreme poverty, discrimination in law &customs, violence, ostracism, violence and homelessness according to the United Nations.
