Thousands stranded after heavy rains in Cape Town

Read < 1 minute

While South Africa’s capital burns, southern parts of the country are under water. Heavy rains have lashed Cape Town in the past few days.

Thousands of poor people living in informal settlements are stranded, as their homes are flooded.

Informal settlements in Khayelitsha, Phillipi and Gugulethu have been flooded following heavy rain this past weekend, disaster management spokesperson Charlotte Powell said.

So far, 1 600 shacks with 6 500 residents have been affected.

No emergency sheltering has been activated, however, as residents have opted to stay with family and friends she said.
