Koffi Annan stirs debate among Kenyans on Twitter with ICC remarks
Former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has provoked a debate among Kenyan social media users following his remarks that condemned African leaders for their attitude towards the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Annan, in an interview in the British Financial Times newspaper, rejected accusations that the ICC was an anti-African institution following threats from African countries to withdraw from the court.
His remarks come after the ICC decision to “terminate” charges against Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto earlier this year, having dropped charges against President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2014. Both had denied involvement in ethnic violence that followed the disputed elections conducted in December 2007.
Annan was the lead mediator in the reconciliatory efforts that bore the unity government led by former president Mwai Kibaki and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Kenyans on Twitter have been sending messages to the former UN chief, some supporting his stance while others want him to keep off the affairs of the country.
KOT as they are widely known, have been using the #SomeOneTellKofiAnnan hashtag to send out their messages. Here are some of the tweets;
#SomeOneTellKofiAnnan were it not for him Kenya would've bled to death, we appreciate his reconciliatory efforts. Forget programmed bots

#SomeOneTellKofiAnnan The guy literally brokered a peace deal, but he cannot be given the time and space to air his opinion.
