Nigeria agrees one month ceasefire with militants
The Nigerian government has agreed to a one-month ceasefire with militants including the Niger Delta Avengers located in the country’s oil-producing southern region, Reuters reports a petroleum ministry official to say.
Militant groups including the Avengers, who have claimed responsivity for various attacks on oil and gas facilities in recent weeks, have however not issued any confirmation on the same.
The militants say they want a bigger share of Nigeria’s oil wealth to be directed towards the impoverished Delta region.
Crude sales make up about 70 percent of the West African country’s national income, with the majority of that oil comes from the southern swampland.
