Hundreds of Burundians expelled from Rwanda after being accused of espionage

Rwanda has expelled nearly 400 Burundi refuges accusing them of spying and fueling tensions between itself and Burundi reports Reuters

This is the second expulsion in a month bring the total number of Burundians deported to 1700

A local government official from Bugabira district in northern Burundi, where most of the refugees come, confirmed the evictions and said that it occurred on Thursday and Friday.

“We were accused of being envoys of Burundi government and sent there to spy on Rwanda,” said one of the refugees while speaking to Reuters.

Over 250,000 Burundians have fled the violence in their countries and headed into Rwanda and Tanzania. Rwandan officials could not be reached however the Rwanda’s Foreign minister Louise Mushikiwabo said last week that the Burundians being expelled were in the country illegally.
