Tanzania revoked the special tax relief duty free shops in military barracks because it is “grossly abused” reports The Citizen.
The waiver on value added tax, excise and customs duty to the members of the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces was introduced in recognition of their devotion to the national service however due to ‘gross abuse’ the government is looking for an alternative way to provide cost relief for its military
“Because of this (gross abuse), there were revenue losses, other countries in the East African Community discarded this arrangement except Rwanda and Tanzania. Now we can no longer delay abolishing this tax relief” said Dr. Philip Mpango, the Finance and Planning minister in Tanzania
“In order to continue offering services to the military, I propose allowances to soldiers to enable them to buy essentials on their own,” he added
