President Museveni awarded highest military honour as Uganda celebrates 35th Heroes’ day
Uganda’s President has been awarded the highest military honour as the East African nation marked its 35th Heroes’ day on Thursday, ‘Order of Katonga’ military medal. President Museveni was recognized for being actively involved in military operations plus for accepting additional responsibilities and danger beyond the call of duty reports local media.
“The Katonga medal I got today, is not for me alone, it’s for those who pioneered this struggle, both dead and alive.” Said President Museveni
The Order of Katonga Medal has been awarded to 2 other heads of state as well former Libya President Col Muammar Gadaffi & Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere posthumously.
Gen. Akandwaho was also awarded for saving Museveni from an ambush by the army in 1980 in Kireka Uganda.
A ten year old girl Yvonne Namaganda that died trying to rescue her colleagues from an inferno at their dormitory in 2008 killing other 19 girls in Budo junior was also remembered and bestoed the Rwenzori Medal. Rwenzori Medal class medal is awarded to civilians who have shown exemplary courage and responsibility to liberate humanity and the country.
A total of 650 medals will be given out to other people who contributed in the armed struggle during the guerrilla war. Last year 1,000 people received medals of honour from the President.
National Honours and Awards law was enacted in 2001, more than 18,000 medals of various categories have been awarded, some to foreign Heads of State
