Sudan’s long serving president Omar al-Bashir has revealed that he will step down when his current term ends in 2020.

Al-Bashir has been in power since 1989.

The 72-year old is wanted by the International Criminal Court to answer to charges of genocide and war crimes.

He told the BBC that his current term would be his last, saying that his job was “exhausting”.

“In 2020, there will be a new president and I will be an ex-president,” he said.

Al-Bashir also denied allegation of abuses perpetrated by the Sudanese forces in renewed violence against black African villages who took up arms in the country’s western Darur region.

The United Nations says more than 2.5 million people have been displaced in Darfur since 2003, with more than 100,000 displaced since January this year alone.

Al-Bashir however says the UN’s figures are inflated and not true.
