Uganda’s main opposition leader Kizza Besigye has once again been arrested while trying to enter the capital Kampala today for the first time since the police lifted his house arrest order last week.

The police had initially allowed him to get into Kampala and proceed to his party’s headquarters for a prayers function on condition that he did not disrupt business in the city.

Besigye had been under house arrest since February when Uganda went to the polls to elect a new president, accused of plotting to incite the public to hold mass protests to demonstrate the re-election of long-serving leader Yoweri Museveni.

The East African country’s police chief on Friday issued an order to the security forces that had blocked Besigye’s house to withdraw.

Upon realizing that Besigye was in town, his supporters are reported to have started gathering, prompting the police to be deployed.

His vehicle is reported to have been towed away as tension went up in the capital.
