Nigeria widens corruption probe targeting army officers

At least 300 firms and individuals who include army officers have been accused of embezzling approximately 241.45 million dollars by the Nigerian government in its crackdown on corruption

According to the presidency the firms/individuals used overpaid defense contracts or fraud.

“A committee set up to probe contracts awarded by the Office of the National Security Adviser from 2011 to 2015 has indicted more than 300 companies and prominent citizens including serving and retired officers of the armed forces,” the presidency said in a statement, reports Reuters

The companies and individuals have repaid over 7 billion naira to the state with 41 billion naira more to pay explained the statement. The statement further said that some of the contractors were overpaid and others paid upfront contrary to contract terms and agreements.

Sambo Dasuki, Former President Jonathan security adviser, is the first former official to be put on trial for graft. A similar committee accesses Dasuki of fraud involving 68 million dollars of defense spending which is part of 2.1 billion dollars in arms deals under scrutiny. Charges which he denies.

President Muhammadu Buhari has fired and investigated over dozens of officials serving under his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan. He has also audited key government bodies such as the oil firm NNPC.
