The Kenyan government has dismissed the board governing the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and ordered the arrest of the council’s chief executive officer and other eight senior officers over examination irregularities

Kenya was marred by irregularities in the national examinations last year with the exams said to have been leaked.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’I and the Ministry of Interior cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery said that initial investigations have revealed complicity, irregularities and illegitimate activities within and without KNEC. They added that the officers listed to be arrested were involved in the examination irregularities that led to the cancellation of examination results of at least 2,709 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and 5,100 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates last year.

“Examination cheating is criminal. We have decided that, we want to restore credibility and reduce criminality in examination, and have discussed with the IG that those involved be arrested immediately and record a statement…Those arrested should show course why legal action should not be taken against them.” Said Interior Cabinet Secretary, Nkaissery according to the Nation newspaper
