Sierra Leone’s President Ernest Bai Koroma has conducted the biggest cabinet reshuffle of his nine-year tenure, sacking four ministers and his army chief as he tries to reserve waning public support for his party.

Koroma appointed new interior and finance ministers and brought opposition leader Mohamed Bangura across the divide, appointing him the new information minister.

Former finance minister Kaifala Marah takes over Sierra Leone’s Central Bank‘s leadership, swapping places with bank governor Momodu Kargbo who takes up the economic portfolio.

In total, 13 ministers were either fired or moved jobs.

All cabinet appointments are subject to parliamentary approval.

The West African country’s cabinet will now have four female ministers in the environment, culture, social welfare and fisheries posts. The previous cabinet had just one.

Koroma also replaced head of the armed forces Lieutenant General Samuel Omar Williams with the army chief’s deputy.
