Benin’s presidential candidates on last-minute rush to lure supporters
It’s the final days of campaigning ahead of Benin’s Sunday presidential election. Current president Thomas Boni Yayi is to step down after 2 terms in office. 33 candidates are running to replace him. One of the favourites is Sebastien Ajavon, a Beninese businessman who’s never before held political office.
Local media have dubbed him “the king of chickens” but Sebastien Ajavon’s leadership bid is no joke.
The 51-year old Beninese billionaire made his fortune through exporting chicken and fish. Up until now, Ajavon has been a political kingmaker.
He funded election campaigns for the now outgoing president. This is the business tycoon’s first time running for any political office.
An independent candidate, he has made his top priority Benin’s energy crisis.
Critics say Ajavon’s inexperience in political affairs and lack of a university education, make him unsuitable for the post of president.
The tycoon’s plain-speaking and economic-focused manifesto is winning over voters. He is now one of the leading contenders in this presidential race.
Voters have already seen Sunday’s poll delayed a week because voter cards had not been distributed in time. Although 40% of voters still don’t have them, the poll will go ahead – pitting together some of Benin’s biggest business and political personalities.
