A male student from Government Day School in Gombe, northeastern part of Nigeria, was shot dead allegedly by a police officer after a testy football match at the Pantami township stadium, witnesses and the family of the victim have said.

The match between Government Day Secondary Pilot and Science School ended in a clash between supporters of the two teams, local media reported.

The game master of Government Day School, Ishiyaku Kaleb, said fighting started after the match ended 1-0 against his school.

He said the student, identified only as Yunusa, was shot dead after the students started throwing rocks, with at least one projectile hitting the unnamed officer.

Sani Madi, the older brother of the victim, said the family would take legal action if the school failed to act over the killing.

The spokesperson for the state police command, Fwaje Atajiri, confirmed the killing, but said investigations were ongoing to establish who shot the student.
