South Sudanese have welcomed the re-appointment of Riek Machar
South Sudan president Salva Kiir has issued a decree appointing his former deputy turned rebel Riek Machar, the country’s first vice president. The Country’s two warring parties recently agreed to share ministerial positions – in a bid to put the new government of national unity in motion.
The deadline for its formation has slipped several times. But it’s hoped Kiir’s announcement will clear the way to a unity government. However, Riek Machar is not in Juba yet. The government of South Sudan is now urging Riek Machar to return to Juba to facilitate formation of the unity government within seven days.
“I call upon my colleague, Dr. Riek Machar to immediately respond to the positive and brotherly move by our oresident to appoint him as the first vice president. It is actually very hard to as first vice president or vice president to operate from abroad.” James Wani Igga
Riek Machar’s team says this is a step in the right direction.
“We are looking forward for the formation of the transitional government of South Sudan. On our side we hail the appointment, we say that’s good.” William Ezekiel, under secretary information, SPLM in opposition
The almost three years war in South Sudan killed tens of thousands and displaced at least four million South Sudanese. The appointment of Salva Kiir has raised hopes in Juba among South Sudanese hoping this will be a final move towards a return of normalcy in the world’s youngest nation.

The move by South Sudanese president Salva Kiir to appoint his former deputy Riek Machar as the first vice president has been welcomed by South Sudanese longing for peace. Salva Kiir has also ordered the military SPLA to move out of the capital Juba to pave for the return of Riek Machar and formation of unity government.
