African Union: Sending in peacekeepers to Burundi still a viable option
The African Union Commission is apparently still pushing for the deployment of peacekeepers in Burundi. At the recent AU summit it was decided to delay that measure but with more reports of violence – protecting civilians is essential.
Four heads of state are to head to Burundi, they’re there to assess the situation -and try and convince President Pierre Nkurunziza to relent. Political dialogue with the opposition is another key assignment for the delegation. The African Union Commission says it’s not too late but remains concerned. Under its charter it can send in a protection force without government permission but that only if there’s clear evidence of ethnic cleansing.
