17 people were killed in a road carnage in Nigeria’s Lagos-Ibadan express way in southwest Oyo State on Sunday, Nigeria’s road commission said.

State commander for the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Yusuf Salami told reporters in Ibadan, the state capital, the accident involved an articulated vehicle and a Peugeot J5 bus.

The officials said the bodies of the dead had been transported to the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary in Ibadan, while the injured were taken to the University College Hospital, Ibadan Hospital and Kejide Hospital.

Investigation into the accident was underway, he said.

Nigeria records high fatality rates for road accidents mainly due to shoddy highways, poorly maintained vehicles and violation of traffic rules by inept drivers.
