A manhunt is still under way for suspects who seized a UN base on Friday. At the weekend Malian soldiers backed by UN helicopters recaptured the base that had been captured by militants.

One army commander was reportedly killed in the operation, together with three of the militants. A fourth militant blew himself up.

The group of around six on Friday drove up the UN base at dawn, and detonated a car bomb at the entrance, before entering the compound. Only several police officers were inside at the time.

Mali has been wracked by violence in recent years, including an insurgency by Islamist and ethnic Tuareg groups that prompted French forces to intervene in the country in 2013. The United Nations established its peacekeeping mission in Mali that year.
