Donors pledge Millions of Dollars to combat Militants
Residents remain in fear in Dalori, Nigeria, several homes torched, at least 86 people killed.
Wreckage of houses smouldering and the mood here is sombre is what’s left of Calorie, Dalori is about 5 kilometres east of Maiduguri the capital. The town was attacked over the weekend by gunmen believed to be of the terrorist group – Boko Haram. They torched several homes and Killed at least 86 people. Residents never saw it coming.
“The insurgents burnt about 1000 houses, animals and food stuffs, They came in big numbers and started shooting sporadically, many of us escaped to the bush, there are many dead bodies in the bush we will go and pick them for burial” Dala Bulama. Dalori Resident
Dalori is home to the largest refugee camp in West Africa. The camp houses about 20,000 refugees who fled their homes as a result of the insurgency. A military spokesman had said the gunmen tried to break into the camp – but we’re beaten back. The town is still tense in the aftermath of the incident. Residents fear for their safety.
“Yesterday around 6:15 the bad guys came and launched a deadly attack in our village. The incident is beyond the strength of the masses, we are suffering, we don’t have enough to defend ourselves, the only village we call is now destroyed” Mustafa Maina, Dalori resident
This is one in a series of attacks that have occurred recently in the region – It’s the deadliest too. The authorities keep insisting the insurgents have been defeated – in spite of these attacks persisting. More than 20000 people have been killed since Boko Haram launched its campaign for an Islamic state in 2009. Over 2 million others have been displaced from their homes.
