Kenya police launch probe after Uber attacks
Kenyan police have lauched an investigation into reports of increasing attacks on taxi drivers affiliated to Uber.
There have been reports in the capital, Nairobi, of the Uber taxi drivers being attacked by other operators who feel the former are pricing them out of the market.
Uber is an online taxi service that allows passengers to order a car using a smart phone application and pay a pre-arranged price.
The international company has allegedly stirred the taxi business by charging lower costs compared to the other operators.
The East African country’s interior ministry in a statement condemned the attacks, terming them as barbaric.
“Such barbaric attacks cannot and shall not be tolerated,” it said, adding that business rivalries should be settled through legal mechanisms.
Kenyans, especially in Nairobi, are reportedly increasingly opting for the Uber services which they can access at the comfort of their smartphones anywhere.
