South African carrier expands in Africa
South African Airline (SAA) already has a strong network across the continent. But with the demand for more flights into Africa, the airline is looking to add on new routes.
“This is one of our most profitable routes on the African continent. And we are so grateful that we are able to provide our customers a choice. And they can fly either from Lagos or from here in Abuja. And it also broadens our region in terms of our customers access because we can now reach the northern part of Nigeria and we are also present in Lagos. So, it is very, very important for us.” Musa Zwane, Acting CEO, SAA
SAA has been struggling financially and recently stopped several international flights including direct flights to Beijing. The state carrier has now shifted focus to concentrate on the demand for more regional flights.
“The typical traveller to Abuja would be your business traveler, government officials as Abuja is the official capital of Nigeria. And it houses or hosts many embassies, businesses and the seat of Parliament.”Duane Ferreirinho, Corporate Communications, SAA
Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa. Its also the most populous country on the continent. With around 160 million people to service, there are plenty business opportunities.
“Between 2000 and 2010 they had 140% population growth. And from last year it’s still looking at a 35% population growth. So that kind of indicates to us that also looking at the fact that it’s one of the wealthiest cities In Africa the we gonna be looking at unprecedented consumerism in the region, a younger population means more spending. And so to me I think the economic growth in the region really is going to strength to strength.” Monique Strydom, African Business Travel Association
The Johannesburg – Lagos route is currently the most profitable route for SAA. The Airline is confident the Abuja route will also pay off.
It took SAA up to 18 months to finally get this flight off the ground. Preparations are now well underway for a gala dinner tonight to celebrate the new Johannesburg Abuja route. The new route will run three times a week.
