Three government ministers have been fired in Gambia following a department reshuffle on Wednesday.
Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh fired the Minister of Fisheries Lamin Nyabally, Energy Minister Edward Sanneh and Minister of Presidential Affairs Yam Keita, after some departments were merged according to Reuters.
Ministries of Energy and Petroleum previously separate have been joined. Ministry of Fisheries was merged with the Ministry of Environment, water, resources, park and wildlife and climate change. Department of Forestry was integrated into the office of the President.
According to the International Monetary Fund, Gambia’s economy is facing serious risks from a worsening budget, rising inflation and tight interest rates.
European Union has temporarily withheld aid money to Gambia in 2014 citing poor human rights record. United Nations ranks Gambia 165 out of 187 countries, the country’s main industries include agriculture and tourism.
Gambia has been ruled by President Jammeh since 1994 from when he seized power through a bloodless coup.
