CAMEROON

Four worshippers were killed in a suicide bombing at a mosque in northern Cameroon on Monday, a security source said, five days after a similar attack left 12 people dead.

A Cameroon official says a 14-year-old suicide bomber attacked a mosque in Cameroon’s north, killing at least four people.

Governor Midjiyawa Bakari said on Monday that the boy came early into a town in the Mayo Tsanaga Division in Cameroon’s far north and blew himself up during morning prayers. He said a civilian defense group set up to fight Boko Haram extremists prevented more deaths by quickly warning those praying.

Bakari said the attacker likely came from Nigeria, whose extremist Boko Haram group is suspected.

A witness told Xinhua by phone the blast took place around 6:00 local time (5:00 GMT) in Ngue Tchewe, a village in Far North bordering Nigeria.

This is the fifth mosque attacked in Cameroon in less than a month.

Boko Haram’s six-year insurgency has killed thousands in Nigeria, and across its borders.

In November 2013, French priest Georges Vandenbeusch was kidnapped from Nguetchewe, with the Boko Haram Islamist group claiming responsibility. He was freed after around 50 days in captivity.

Cameroon is one of five countries contributing troops to a regional force intended to wipe out Boko Haram.
