Achieving Resolutions 2016: Healthiest New Year resolution means sticking to a healthy life style, here’s how
Since a new year means for most an opportunity to start over again, it is common for one to make a commitment in the beginning of the year. An overly made decision is starting to live a healthy life by eating right and working out.
Losing weight is an ill-fated New Year’s resolution according to The New England Journal of Medicine, the journal outlines many reasons as to why no matter how much you lose through any of the ways, could be dieting, working out or some form of surgery, you are bound to gain it all back, all because it is hard to maintain it. Good news the journal dates back to 1998.
Health wise, being overweight is a serious problem which might lead to coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and a variety of musculoskeletal problems according to a health journal. Being physical activity especially aerobic exercise is said to improve learning and even prevent dementia according to UCLA Researchers. So good for you if you have made the decision to cut some weight or live a healthy eating life.
Weight loss can be tricky; the battle of weight loss is real. Weight issues are also related to the food we eat; somehow junk is more appealing than healthy vegetables and fruits. Here are a couple of ways to keep the resolution this year.
- “Overeating doesn’t make you fat; the process of getting fat makes you overeat. “ Says Doctor David Ludwig from his book Always Hungry? According to the doctor, starving the body or eating calorie-restricted diets only makes the situation worse since it tells the body to want more food making you hungry plus it also makes the metabolism low to keep most of the calories in the body. Dr. Ludwig explains that under-eating causes weight loss short term but the body adapts and returns weight back in the long term. His solution is high fat foods such as nuts, olive oil, avocado, fish and dark chocolate to jump start weigh loss. After much research and pilot test of the diet plan in his book, the doctor concludes it is good to eat fats to reduce fat.
- Office life which is basically sitting all day does not do much for someone who wants to lose weight or keep fit. According to The Health Journals, sitting is the new smoking; the sedentary lifestyle affects health and economic productivity. The solution given is a list of exercises one can do next to their desk. For the shy people lifting legs 90 degrees for 15 seconds sounds ideal. The lifting should be done at least four times. Other exercises given by the journal include single leg squatting, this involves holding one leg mid-air while squatting with the other leg. Stand behind the chair, hold the chair, keep the chest up and back straight and do squats are some of the reasonable exercises for the office.
- Learn to read the labels on food you purchase. According to Authors of You, Losing weight, doctor Michael Roizen and Doctor Mehmet Oz. Reading food labels should determine whether the food goes into your mouth or not. The doctors gave the following list as the things to watch out in labels and not eat at all cost in this journey of healthy eating. They include; Simple sugars, enriched, bleached or refined flour (This means it is stripped of its nutrients), all syrups including high fructose corn syrups (HFCS), saturated fat (four legged animal fat or palm or coconut oil) and trans-fat (partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.)Doctor Bimal Chhajer in his book 201 Tips for loosing weight recommends the following physical activities for weight loss they include brisk walking, running, jogging, playing games, cycling, swimming, dancing, climbing stairs, skipping, yoga and aerobics.
- According to the Association of UK Dietitians Eating a variety of foods can improve general wellbeing, reduce the risk of conditions including heart disease, stroke, some cancers, diabetes and osteoporosis (thin bones) and help you manage your weight. You need to eat sensibly, choosing a varied diet from a range of foods, not smoking and keeping active are all great ways to boost your health. A healthy meal has a portion of fruit, meat/ fish/eggs/ pulses, dairy and sugar and fat.
