Barcelona forward Lionel Messi last night was crowned the winner of the 2016 Ballon d’Or in a ceremony held at the Kongresshaus in Zurich, setting a new record having won it five times now.
The Argentine piped Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and team mate Neymar Jr. to the most coveted individual award in football.
Messi reclaimed the trophy from Rolando who had won it for the past two years in a row. Before that, the Barcelona prodigy had remarkably won it four years in a row.
The announcement had little surprises if any, as Messi had long been tipped to beat the Portuguese to the prize after guiding Barcelona to an amazing trophy haul in 2015, winning 5 trophies in total.
The ceremony was graced by the best footballers from across the world, all of whom turned up in style to grace the red carpet.
