Over 1000 South Africans died in road accidents since December

South African President Jacob Zuma has added his voice to concern over the high number of deaths on his country’s roads over the festive season.

More than a thousand South Africans have lost their lives in road accidents since the beginning of December.

Excessive speed, drunken and negligent driving and driver fatigue are the main reasons for the high death toll during the holiday season in South Africa this year. Nearly one-thousand-500 people lost their lives around the country.

The Transport Ministry said it was worrying that so many young people aged 19 and upwards had perished in over a thousand horror crashes.

Zuma said it was clear that more much needed to be done to promote road safety. This included a drive-safely campaign to try and bring the number of road deaths down particularly during this period when thousands of holidaymakers are making their way home.
