Retrenchments in the mining sector is South Africa have become a fact of life.The sector has lost thousands of jobs in the last decade and it appears that the trend is set to continue.
Australian-listed South32 is latest to announce plans to cut 447 jobs at a South African manganese mine.
The National Union of Mine workers which is the country’s largest mining labour body, is now calling on the mines ministry to “intervene to halt” and prevent the layoffs.
While Eskom battles to make itself most cost efficient, the NUM suggests that it needs to broaden its view, because the mines that provide coal to Eskom power stations were purpose built, close to their power plants.
