South Africa’s African National Congress Women’s League’s (ANCWL) members are demanding a long prison sentence for former paralympian Oscar Pistorius.

Pistorius was on Thursday found guilty of murdering his former girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in an appeal of a court ruling that could reportedly see him sent back to prison for up to 15 years.

The paralympian was transferred into house arrest in Octber one year after he was handed a 5-year sentence for manslaughter.

“We are looking forward that Oscar Pistorius should get up from 20 years and or life,” the league’s Free State chairperson Mapaseka Nkoane said outside court.

Reeva Steenkamp’s mother June was reportedly seen outside the court in Bloemfontein, embracing members of the ANCWL, who were singing songs of celebration.

Part of the ANCWL members have been supporting Mrs. Steenkamp throughout the trial and subsequent appeal

Pistorius’ family have reacted to the ruling, saying that its legal team will study thejudgement.

“We have taken note of the judgement that has just been handed down by the Supreme Court of Appeal,” family spokesperson Anneliese Burgess said.

“The legal team will study the finding and we will be guided by them in terms of options going forward.

“We will not be commenting any further at this stage.”
