Authorities in Guinea have started the countdown to the end of Ebola in the West African country where the epidemic has killed at least 11,000 people since it was first reported two years ago.

Fode Tass Sylla, the spokesperson for Guinea’s national Ebola response reported that the last known Ebola patient had been released on Tuesday.

For the country to be declared Ebola-free, it has to go 42 days without any new cases.

After the 42 days, authorities from the World Health Organization (WHO) will declare the country free of any transmissions.

Sierra Leone and Liberia, the other two countries hardest hit by the epidemic have already achieved the feat.

Authorities in Guinea however say that people remain fearful of the disease.
