Tunisia’s tourism industry hits down low

Tourism in Tunisia has hit rock bottom following the a militia attack that left 59 tourists dead

In June a gunman attacked a hotel in Sousse on the Mediterranean coast killing at least 38 people, three months later a couple gunmen killed 21 tourists in Bardo National Museum in the capital city of Tunis.

Tourism makes 7 percent of the total GDP of Tunisia. Tourism has gone almost flat with some hotels closing shop and others struggling to survive. Tourism related businesses are also struggling to survive. Some businesses have taken to re-branding and advertising to draw back foreign tourists.

Security has been heightened in the tourist’s sites but still the numbers of tourists remain low.

Tunisia’s growth forecast has been reduced to 0.5 percent this year from an anticipated 3 percent. The Central bank of Tunisia has stated that revenue from tourism has gone down by 76 percent since 2010.
