After more than a year behind bars in Egypt, Mohamed Fahmy is finally free. Speaking alongside his lawyer, Fahmy said he owes a lot to the international community.
Fahmy was arrested in December 2013 with two other Al Jazeera English colleagues Peter Greste and Baher Mohamed and sentenced to three years in prison in a retrial earlier this year, for airing what a court described as “false news” and coverage biased in favour of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood.
Fahmy left Cairo on Tuesday for the first time since his arrest in 2013, after his name was removed from a no-fly list. He is expected to travel to Canada, where he will teach journalism at the University of British Columbia.
