Inhumane practices by Ghana’s police force alarm UN expert
For the past 4 days the UN expert on torture has been touring Ghanaian detention facilities, psychiatric hospitals and prison.
Juan Mendez said more needs to be done to tackle torture and inhumane practices in some of these places.
He said acts of torture were still being used to treat mentally ill patients in some psychiatric facilities. Mendez also highlighted concerns about practices of the Ghanaian police force.
Mendez did praise govt efforts to try and tackle these issues but said not enough had been done since his last visit a year ago. He said the govt could no longer shut it eyes to the problems in the country.
