A motion seeking to rename a Nairobi city road after environmentalist Wangari Maathai has been approved.

The city county assembly urged Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero to implement the Motion immediately and rename Limuru Road after the Nobel laureate.

“Yesterday (Tuesday) he renamed Milimani Road after Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete. We want him to do the same tomorrow (Wednesday) and give Limuru Road the new name,” Karen Member County Assembly David Mberia said in support of the Motion by his Karura counterpart, Mr Kamau Thuo.

Prof Maathai passed away on September 21, 2011 at the age of 71.

Earlier this year, the African Union honoured her posthumously by naming the front gardens at its headquarters in Addis Ababa the Wangari Maathai Gardens.
