At least 25 people have been killed while 81 others reported missing since the fight against terrorism was launched in Kenya two years ago according to a report released by Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).
A preliminary report indicates immense torture of innocent people with 125 cases of human rights violations reported.
Individuals recounted of arbitrary arrests, extortion and torture such as electric shocks, sleep deprivation and extreme heat/cold. Security forces behind these allegations include the military, the Kenya Wildlife Service, Border patrol and the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU).
KNCHR vice chair George Morara said that there has been an increase in cases of torture, illegal detentions and disappearances since the anti-terrorism campaign began. The places with most cases recorded include Nairobi, Mombasa, Tana River, Lamu, Wajir, Garissa and Mandera.
The commission has asked for accessibility to information on the operation, requested for a public apology from President Uhuru Kenyatta to those affected and for the government to give civic education to the military on more civilized forms of torture.
