Algeria, Niger and Chad have stressed the urgency of creating a national unity government to solve the conflict in the neighbouring Libya.
The Algerian African Affairs minister and the Foreign Affairs ministers of Niger and Chad have stressed the importance of such a government to preserve the territorial integrity of Libya, her unity and its people’s cohesion.
Issuing a joint press statement, the three ministers, Abdelkader Messahel, Aichatou Kane Boulama and Moussa Faki Mahamat said that with the help of the international community, the move would allow Libya to tackle the numerous challenges it faces.
Libya borders Algeria to the west and Niger and Chad to the south.
Since the NATO-backed uprising against long-time dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been wrecked by unending violence.
The Arab country has two rival parliaments, the General National Congress in Tripoli and the internationally recognized government based in the east.
Reports indicate that a unity government deal could be reached in the near future after the rivals resumed peace talks in Geneva, Switzerland.
The United Nations has expressed its hope that the talks could lead to an agreement being signed by September 20, thereafter a unity government coming into force a month later.
