Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said it has discovered about 80,000 Togolese who have been registered as Ghanaian voters.  According to the party, what they have found was amounts to “a clear indication” that the 2012 voters’ register was bloated.

Speaking at a press conference to make a case for a new register ahead of the 2016 elections, the NPP’s running mate, Dr Mahamudu Dawumia explained that using a facial biometric recognition technology, a team of investigators from the NPP unraveled  76, 286 potential matches of Togolese voters in Ghana’s voter’s register.

He explained that the investigative team obtained all the voters’ registers across the border countries of Ghana; Togo, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso and used it for their investigations.

Dr Bawumia explained that the facial biometric recognition technology had been programmed to identify facial characteristics such as the distances between eyes and ears.
