Half of the world’s entire online population is now on Facebook, according to the social network’s latest figures.
Facebook reported that half of the world’s estimated online population now check in to the social networking site at least once a month.
According to BBC the number of people using the site at least monthly grew 13% to 1.49 billion in three months to the end of June.
The number is equal to half of the estimated three billion people who use the internet worldwide.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg described it as a “strong quarter”, despite shares falling 3% in after-hours trading in the US.
According to Facebook, people in the US were now spending more than one out of every five minutes on their smartphones on Facebook.
Mobile advertising revenue was the biggest factor, accounting for more than three quarters of the total.
The rise in monthly active users helped drive second quarter revenue up 39% year-on-year to $4.04bn
Facebook also highlighted the increasing importance of video, saying that usage continued to grow, adding that it would start selling its Oculus Rift 3D headset in the first three months next year.
Zuckerberg said that video and gaming would be huge.
“Video will be huge, gaming will be huge. Once you start to get a critical mass we can get a social app which we are more specialized in,” He said
