More than 100 buffaloes and two rhinos at the Lake Nakuru National Park have died following an anthrax outbreak. Announcing the outbreak on Tuesday, County Executive for Agriculture Dr Stanley Chepkwony said the animals have died in the past five days.

He said the disease outbreak was confirmed after samples collected from the dead animals were analysed by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Veterinaries at the park.

“We are also warning people not to come into contact with these animals or meat. People should also make sure they consume inspected meat,” he said.Dr Chepkwony said that free anthrax vaccination will begin on Thursday in all affected areas to prevent further spread.

“We will also be giving free anti rabies vaccination for dogs because sometimes they spread anthrax by eating infected carcass,” said Dr Chepkwony.
