At least nineteen people have died after an attack on a hotel in the Tunisian beach resort of Sousse, Tunisia’s interior ministry has said. The attack was on the Imperial Marhaba hotel, a source and local radio said. A security source at the scene said the body of one gunmen armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle lay where police had shot him dead. It was unclear whether there were other assailants.
Graphic photos which appear to have been taken at the attack scene have been taken by an Instagram user. They are geo-tagged on the same area of beach where the attack has taken place, north of the centre of the city of Sousse. The images show a man and a woman lying bloodstained in their beach shorts next to a row of sun loungers.
Tunisia has been on high alert since March when militants killed 22 people, mainly foreign tourists, in an attack on a museum in the capital Tunis. Sousse is one of Tunisia’s most popular beach resorts, drawing visitors from Europe and neighbouring North African countries.
