Amama Mbabazi to run for presidency in Uganda

A former Prime Minister of Uganda has declared his intention to run for president.

Amama Mbabazi will be challenging Yoweri Museveni’s long rule in the vote next year.

Mbabazi who made the announcement in a video message on You Tube, said that the 2016 polls will bethe most important in a generation, saying:  “The coming election is about the future, about making Uganda work for everyone.  It is about reinvigorating our country and making it fit for the 21st century and beyond.”

Mr Mbabazi was sacked by President Museveni Last year , a mo0ve many saw as though the president was getting rid of what he saw as a potential challenger.

President Museveni has been in power since 1986 and is expected to seek a fourth term in next year’s poll.

Mr Museveni has already been endorsed by the party’s national executive committee but that needs to be approved by a party congress.
