At least 14 people were killed and 70 injured when a train and a lorry collided south of the Tunisian capital on Tuesday, the transport and interior ministries said.
The accident happened at El Fahes, some 60 kilometres (40 miles) from Tunis, at around 6:30 am (0530 GMT) in the midst of the morning rush hour.
Transport minister Mahmoud Ben Romdhane has been quoted expressing fear that the death toll could rise.
Most of the dead are said to be passengers on the train, which derailed. Both the diver of the train and the lorry lost their lives.
Interior Ministry Spokesman Mohammed Ali Aroui said that the train was heading to Tunis and that ambulances were sent from neighboring cities to El Fahes to transport the injured to hospitals.
