Former Ugandan PM to run for presidency in 2016 general elections
Uganda’s Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi on Monday announced that he would run for the presidency in the 2016 general elections.
In a video release, the former NRM secretary general described the 2016 polls as the most important in a generation, saying: “The coming election is about the future, about making Uganda work for everyone. It is about reinvigorating our country and making it fit for the 21st century and beyond.” Local newspaper reported.
Among some of the things Mbabazi promised was to revive Uganda’s democracy and institutions, transform the economy and attract both local and foreign investments, so as to promote equitable development that will benefit all regions of the country and provide jobs that fit the 21st century.
Mbabazi was born in 1949. He served as the Minister for Security in the Cabinet from 2009 to 2011 then later became the Prime Minister of Uganda from 2011 to 2014.
In 2005 to January 2015 he served as the Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement. He serves as the Member of Parliament for Kinkiizi West in Uganda’s Kanungu District. He has held the position since 1996 after the promulgation of the constitution.
