A Nigerian delegate at the 25th African Union summit was robbed by men posing as Nigerian police officers in Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Thursday.
Gabriel Gundo, a Nigerian official, was traveling from OR Tambo International Airport to Sandton, where the summit is being held, when he was stopped by men posing as police officers on Wednesday night, local police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.
The 55-year-old was robbed of $500 and R700. Gundo was at the Sandton Police Station during the early hours of this morning to make a statement about his ordeal shortly after arriving in South Africa. He was pulled over by an unknown number of men in a Hyundai at the Marlboro and N1 Highway interchange while travelling to his hotel in Sandton.
The robbery is the second such incident involving international delegates attending events in South Africa. Last month a group of delegates attending the Pan African Parliament were robbed at gunpoint just outside their Midrand hotel.
The African Union Summit is being held at the Sandton Convention Centre.
