The government of Burundi says it will consider the proposal to delay elections for at least a month and a half.
EAC leaders made the request during an emergency summit on Burundi in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
Burundian Opposition though says it’s disappointed. It feels the leaders did not address their concerns during the summit.
East African Community (EAC) leaders met in Tanzania on Sunday and called on Burundi’s government to delay elections so as to create an peaceful environment conducive for the polls.
The issue of whether President Pierre Nkurunzinza should stand for a third term was not discussed at the conference.
Opposition is against the president’s bid for Presidency, saying it’s violating the constitution. It has now called for protests until he steps down.
President Pierre Nkurunziza was nominated by his party to run for presidency for a third term.
There have been violent protests in Burundi since current President Pierre Nkurunziza announced a bid for a third term in office in April.
The constitution states that a president can only be in office for two-terms.
