Nigeria’s agriculture minister, Akinwumi Adesina, has been elected as the 8thPresident of the African Development Bank. Adesina faced eight other candidates in the race to replace, Donald Kaberuka who steps down in August after a decade in charge. The bank is one of the continent’s biggest lending institutions, financing mostly infrastructure projects. The banks board of governors voted in favour of the Nigerian minister after the race was narrowed down to three candidates who included finance minister from Cape Verde, Cristina Duarte and Chadian, Bedoumra Kordje. Other candidates were dropped in the initial voting rounds at a closed door session. The bank’s members include 54 African states and 26 non-African nations including the U.S., China, Japan and the U.K.
