Uganda is in talks to extradite a suspected rebel warlord from Tanzania.
It’s been hunting Jamil Mukulu for years – and now believes he’s the suspect that Tanzanian authorities captured last month
After almost two decades on the run, Jamil Mukulu now looks to be in custody.
He was picked up last month, after crossing into Tanzania from the DR Congo. Uganda sent a team in on Monday – to try to confirm his identity.
Ugandan military spokesman Paddy Ankunda said the physical and visible identification of the gentleman who is under arrest show that he could be the one.
However the military is still going to conduct a thorough scientific test by way of DNA to confirm that he is the one’
Mukulu is a senior leader in the Islamist group, Allied Democratic Forces. It’s been accused of various atrocities in the eastern DR Congo.
”This is definitely a big blow to the organization of the ADF and to the command capability of the ADF, ” added Ankunda.
”However terrorism as we know it has the capacity to recuperate.. so we cannot say it’s game down, we have to remain vigilant and continue to fish out those other leaders who are still in the bush.”
The UN estimates that the ADF has between 1,200 and 1,400 fighters. The Congolese army has recently overrun some of its bases.
