Dozens of migrants have drowned in the Mediterranean after a boat carrying an estimated 137 people sank south of Sicily.

According to the charity group Save the Children, up to 40 people fell into the sea as a rescue vessel was approaching. The survivors arrived in the city of Catania on Tuesday.

Italy’s Finance Police handed out fresh aerial video showing more overcrowded migrant boats being spotted and rescued off the coasts of Libya.

The video which was shot on May 4 is just one of many similar rescues that took place in the Mediterranean as around 6,800 migrants were rescued from overcrowded boats crossing to Europe over the weekend.

At least 1,750 people have died this year trying to cross the Mediterranean, a 20-fold increase on the same period in 2014.
